Probably originally part of a Vintage Nesting Box Set with a matte orange/red rust toned lacquer style finish.
The feel is lightweight with a plastic finish but in the style of lacquer with the black interior and ridged design covering the exterior.
I think its origin is Japanese and guessing possibly dating to around the 1980s.
A lovely stand alone piece or perfect on a shelf with other decorative objects to add that pop of colour.
